LAS VEGAS, (January 4, 2010) – L5 Technology today introduced the L5 Remote, an accessory and free app that will turn any iPhone or iPod touch into a universal remote control. Launching at ShowStoppers @ CES, the L5 Remote is designed to provide consumers with a powerful alternative to multiple and often-confusing remote control devices. The L5 Remote promises to transform the iPhone and iPod touch into a personal universal remote that controls televisions, DVDs, DVRs, cable boxes, audio equipment, and most other products that come with an infrared remote.
Developed by L5 Technology, the L5 Remote will consist of a very small hardware device that plugs into an iPhone or iPod touch dock connector, plus a free app to be available from the iTunes App Store. The L5 Remote will offer a quick and easy drag and drop set-up, so consumers can create their own ideal, personally customized remote control interface. The L5 Remote will be priced at MSRP $49.95 and is scheduled to be available in February from the L5 Technology web site www.l5remote.com and retailers nationwide.
“With the fast pace of innovation in the smartphone market, handhelds are becoming the consumer electronics platform of choice, causing disruptions across many markets. We see peripherals that connect smartphones to the physical world as key components in the revolution,” said Wade McNary, CEO of L5 Technology. “Leveraging the power, versatility, and portability of handheld devices, and following Apple’s philosophy of design elegance and simplicity, we have solved a common problem. This one small device reverses a long trend toward complexity in remote controls.”
How Does L5 Remote Work?
Consumers will purchase the L5 Remote hardware – an adaptor measuring 1.25 x .85 inches – and plug it into the iPhone or iPod touch docking port. They will then be prompted to download a free app from the iTunes App Store, which allows them to simply drag-and-drop any desired combination of buttons to create their own perfect remote control interface. A short, guided training sequence follows, resulting in a smart remote control that replaces their pile of old remotes with a single powerful and convenient one.
Using infrared technology, the L5 Remote will be able to control any number of devices in any number of rooms. Consumers will be able to easily set it up to control products in the living room, bedroom, office, or any other location. The L5 Remote will work to a distance of approximately 30 feet.
The L5 Remote is portable and does not require batteries, Wi-Fi or external power to work. The product can control thousands of devices, including TVs, cable boxes, stereos, DVD players, ceiling fans, air conditioners, and many other products.

Hi – I was wondering if there are any plans to make an Android version of this device?
BTW, I have an app in the Android market called Roku Remote which acts as a remote control for the Roku digital media player for streaming video like Netflix to the TV.
Thanks
-Gregg
Hi.
When will this product be available??
Jeff
Will this work with Sony Playstation 3? I currently use a Harmony remote to do so with the help of a Logitech Harmony Adapter for Playstation 3.
Hallo
it looks very nice, but can you also control Bang & Olufson equipment?
Regards
Peter
I’ve been wanting this for years. I often sit on the couch with my iPhone and 3 different remotes. It would be wonderful to use just one device. I’ll buy it the moment it becomes available.
I’ll be getting one as soon as it’s available here in Canada.
Looks very promising!
I’m getting this the day it becomes available.
Where is your booth located?
Can’t wait to own and test this. This is what I’ve been waiting for since I got my iPhone. Thinking ahead, it would be a great boon if L5Technology created a user forum where users can upload and share their Remote designs, especially if future software releases allow for Themes!!
This NEEDS to be able to control the DVD portion of an XBOX 360. That would be very cool!!
This is a good idea, but the little IR dongle would soon go missing in my house. Why can’t you make the IR transmitter battery powered and build in a bluetooth receiver. That way the IR transmitter could be taped (velcro’ed) to the under side of the coffee table and it would be controlled via bluetooth on the iphone without a dongle. I am aware that it would increase cost, but it would be well worth it to not have to plug in and unplug the transmitter from the phone every time I sat down to watch TV. Also for me to purchase this it would have to include bluetooth control for the PS3. There is always that one appliance that can’t be controlled using these universal remotes, which is why I never bought one. I would like to hear your thoughts on this.
@ Geir, Kmok7: Stay tuned. You’re going to like what you see. Thanks for your comments.
Finally the item I have been looking for. I cannot wait already control my htpc with my iPhone. When will this hit the market for UK users?
@ Tom: L5 is exhibiting at ShowStoppers CES, which is a press event on Thursday night.
@ Robert, Tony: The L5 remote will is an IR device and so it will not control PS3, which is Bluetooth, unless you use an adapter. These are available from many manufacturers.
@ Jeff: We are scheduled to begin shipping in February. Sign the email list by clicking NOTIFY ME, and you’ll be the first to know.
@ Gregg: We are evaluating the Android market. If you sign the NOTIFY ME list, we’ll keep you up to date.
@ Peter: The L5 remote is not currently compatible with B&O equipment. Sign the NOTIFY ME list, and we’ll tell you if this changes.
Cool can’t wait for this L5 remote!
Cheers,
Free News Post @ http://WirePost.com
Price point? This is brilliant. I hate remotes. I have 3 in my bed right now to control all my stuff
Finally. I will get this the day it becomes available. I once had a Palm Tungsten e2 that came with an IR transmitter. I found a program that did this same thing. When my Palm broke, that was one of the things I missed most. You guys have solved the last thing my iPod can do that my Palm could do. When it comes out, will it be at Best Buy or will I need to order online?
Oh,I think this is a good practice. But we are a remote control manufacturer. This will be bad news for us…..
I would love to to do a preview/review for this and publish it on howardforums.com please. And I would like to give the review unit away there and purchase my own please. I am already signed up.
@Betty – I guess you guys should have innovated first instead of producing same old equipment
It’s an open market, RC manufacturers had how many years to do this? Too many companies are too complacent. Not that you make the decisions, just saying.
@L5 – Do you have an equipment compatibility list anywhere and price point? Good stuff, excited to see this.
Will it be possible to program the remote buttons by entering codes, or can they only be trained by other remotes?
What devices are compatible? I don’t want to purchase the L5 and then find out a Sony Receiver and Samsung TV and Blu-Ray aren’t compatible…
@Kevin: Please email your press credentials to media@L5technology. We will put you on the list. However, we cannot guarantee everyone will receive a review unit because we’ve received over 300 requests so far!
@ Jeff: We do not have a published equipment compatibility list. There are about 300,000 IR devices, so it’s impossible to test them all. We will work with all the major brands, and most smaller brands. The analysis done on the incoming signal is extremely fast and accurate. If you have a specific product you’d like to know about, email support@L5technology.com, and we’ll do our best to verify it.
@David: The L5 remote is primarily a learning remote, i.e. trained by other remotes. In testing, our users found this to be the fastest, most accurate way to set up their custom remote on their iPhone/iPod touch. We’ll post one of our test videos later that shows two people setting up the same remote, one using a data base, and the other training. At the moment when the one using the training has finished, you look over at the other one, and he’s still trying to get the model numbers off the back of the TV and other components. Comedy. Any problems with this method in the past, has been fixed by the power and UI of the iPhone. We are able to do an extremely sophistocated analysis in less than a second.
By the way, future versions of the app will also include Import/Exports functions, so you’ll be able to share programmed devices, and import device codes for which the original remote has been lost.
@Allen: All of these brands will work.
I will also be purchasing this device once it becomes available, for sure! Question though, will this have in-app control of Auto-Lock? Perhaps have a setting that would automatically turn Auto-Lock off when the app is launched would be ideal. I would hate to always go into settings and turn the Auto-Lock off, so the iPhone doesn’t lock always. I’m a channel surfer and even having Auto-Lock on the 5-minute setting wouldn’t be long enough. lol. Please tell me it does. I’ll buy this device regardless, but I’m just wondering.
Looking forward to this coming out.
P.s. will this app, and device, be available in Canada at launch date? …some apps, for no reason, are not available in the Canada App Store. ?
@Kered: The auto-lock is controlled by the OS, so we have no control over it’s behavior. Different users set the iPhone up in different ways to make this as convenient as possible. For your style, I’m guessing you’ll leave the auto lock at 5 minutes to avoid draining the battery, and turn off the password, so it’s easy to go back to the app. If you’re not worried about battery life because you’re going to recharge that night, you can turn auto lock off, and the L5 remote app will dim the screen after 30 seconds of no activity. When the iPhone senses movement, the screen will come on again.
We will be launching in the US and Canada simultaneously. Sign the NOTIFY ME list to know when.
Thank you for the reply. I now wish I had attended CES this year, but life gets in the way sometimes. May first and last CES was 2008 and I will be attending again, probably next year.
How can one become a reseller for my country? I couldn’t find any info on the website…
)
PS: I’m living in Switzerland (country w probably the highest iPhone density in the world
@Daniel: Please send distribution inquiries to sales@L5technology.com. Thanks for your interest.
Why is this not incorporated into a case? The clunky “cap” at the bottom is silly. Redesign and incorporate into a case like the Morphie charger or Incase charger and I’ll buy it—if the case is thin enough!
Throw in Bluetooth and make it work through thick walls throughout the house. Make it chargeable in the case too. I could go on…Get to work.
@wademcnary
Actually, individual apps can control/shut-off the autolock feature. A number of apps do it based on an in-app option setting.
It’s the idleTimerDisabled property of the UIApplication object.
http://developer.apple.com/iPhone/library/documentation/UIKit/Reference/UIApplication_Class/Reference/Reference.html#//apple_ref/occ/instp/UIApplication/idleTimerDisabled
This sounds like an amazing device. Any plans for incorporating Bluetooth control as well for PS3 owners? I would definitely love that so that I dont need my controller for watching Blu-rays. That’s the only thing holding me back from a Harmony remote.
How do you solve the potential problems with incomming calls while using the iPhone as remote?
Automatic turn down the volume?
Automatic pause movie?
Automatic send callers to answering machine?
Jan
I think adding radio remote would be a good feature. That would allow you to controll dish receivers, ceiling fans, and gas logs. I also like the idea that was already mentioned to make it battery powered and controlled by bluetooth. That would elemintate the hassle of having to plug and unplug the device all the time. This is the type of device that I would most certaily lose after a few days. I would go a step further in the concept of creating a powered unit and create one that could be plugged into an outlet that way it does not have to be charged or have the battery replaced.
This is AWESOME!!! I can’t wait to see what other innovative things you have coming up. I saw on the “about us” portion of your web-site that your company is also a gaming company? Cool, can’t wait.
Wow, nice gadget. I want one if it can control my tv and desktop machine.
Alan,
I’m a U.K. Resident. Are you releasing worldwide? How long until release? U.K. Price? Retailer? Will we be able to download preconfigured/user designed remotes/designs?…. I have always thought Apple missed a trick by not adding IR. Finally, hurry up and get this to market.
@Brian. Thanks for stating this as I had thought that the autolock was controllable from the individual app. I know I have some apps that have this option…a lot of clock apps have this ability. I would love it if this app did too as I constantly pick up and put down my remote for my sat box. And to always have to press the home button and then slide-to-unlock the phone would be a real annoyance. Please add this to your app in the future. Thanks.
@Brian: You’re hired! This feature will be included.
@Michael: These are good ideas. Stay tuned. You’re going to like what you see!
Wade: Brilliant! FYI, there is an app on my iPhone called AlarmClock that overrides the OS autolock.
I’d like a feature that I can use to turn off obnoxious TVs in airport departure lounges. How about that?
Finally! Looks nice. A few points:
1) It would be nice if it could import Pronto definition files. Tons of these are already available.
2) You could ad the option of going straight from wifi to IR emitter(s) OR offer the option of an RF dongle with RF to IR emitter(s) OR (the ultimate solution) use the iPod wifi to talk to 3 types of wifi converters/emitters: wifi to IR, wifi to RF and wifi to Bluetooth (for the PS3 and future devices).
3) You need to unplug the dongle to charge the iPod (not a biggie)
4) PS3 (bluetooth) not directly supported (not your fault) but see #2 above.
5) Will we be able to create and import our own buttons bitmaps?
Lot of potential here!
Iam Nemo
My fantasy has always been to use a technology like this one, but rather than have to “create” the “bottons” for the device you which to control via your iphone we would all be able to download the app from itunes which would be an exact replication of the equipments already existing hardware (remote). This would stop everyone in my family from having to “relearn” another universal device that works well but not completely. Who knows, maybe this would totally eliminate the need for any remotes at all. Each manufacturer would spend their resources ($) on devolping great apps, not so-so remotes.
Great energy here. To all: Notice that the company listens and pays attention to customers (potential customers thus far). That is a great sign of what to expect in the future.
@L5: Your coders are going to be very busy for the next couple of months. Based on a lot of great suggestions here and your statement that great things are coming, I can hardly wait for version 2-point-something and 3-point-something of your remote software. I like what Jan (#39) is suggesting. I also want to clarify that I was referring to having different themes for the L5 remote software, not the phone OS.
For a future hardware version of the remote, maybe including a beep & flash feature on the remote dongle, activated from the phone, would help locate it when misplaced. Of course this would complicate the remote since it would need a power source and a receiver. I personally would not need this but it seems some would.
Another though: Would it be possible to incorporate Programming listing into the app? Then, selecting a program from the guide would change the TV/Cable channel. Not really sure if this would be useful.
@Jay: That’s not much of a fantasy. haha. Most of the original remote layouts are a nightmare! Universal remotes are a $500 million industry that exists because people are frustrated with having 4 ugly, confusing, and redundant remotes. Downloading those to your iPhone’s small screen would just transfer the problem. The first step, we feel, is to use the iPhone’s multitouch and processing power to let the user hide the buttons he doesn’t use, and organize the ones he does use in an arrangement that’s logical to him. Many people only use a few buttons from each remote, so the resulting UI can be incredibly simple. If you need every button from every remote in it’s original configuration, then you should be pretty satisfied with the original remotes, and you’re probably too much of a power user for this kind of product.
Will there be any funtionality included to build “macros” EX: touch one button and have Blue Ray, TV and Receiver all turn on and adjust to the proper settings for watching a Movie?
@Nick: Yes, there will be macros, and you’re going to love how simple and intuitive they are to set up.
I would like to know:
- Are you going to publish the “API”/interface for the dongle so that other developers can access the IR? It seems more than reasonable to do this since your app is free and you make money only on the hardware. I can imagine that you have just broken down the significant barrier (hardware) and there are many software developers who will now write apps and you don;t even have to do that development any more – you can just sell the IR hardware!
- Are you going to have an online database of products so I can download IR codes rather than do the tedious learning thing?
- Will you at least allow people to “share” learned IR codes online somehow if you don’t provide the database of all IR codes?
- I look forward to buying one of these. (I had developed my own set of requirements and was accepted to the made for iPod program so i could build the hardware and software for this very same app)
@Tim: An API is a great idea, and something we intend to offer. Contact me at wade@L5technology.com, and I’ll give you more details. There will be a way to upload and download codes, most likely in Version 2.
@wade:
) easily… but the availability of an API would probably “solve” that in no time
I contacted sales@L5technology.com, but haven’t heard back from them yet… too many people want to sell it?
BTW: API is a great idea… I wanted to ask if there will be some kind of online/backup system so one could transfer the codes to other phones (like my gf’s
Have I missed something? I haven’t seen the most important feature of a remote mentioned; macros. Can this be programed to do the multiple functions necessary for home theatre? (Without this capability the L5 would be worthless)
@bradleydad: Yes, the L5 Remote supports macros, and you’re really going to like how intuitive they are to set up.
Think we are going to see this app/device sooner rather later? I was thinking it would make a nice Valentines gift for the geeks in our lives.
will it work with the iPad?
Yes! Thanks to Apple, everything that works on the iPhone will work with the iPad.
Good stuff,
I have one question, how many leds in the dongle?
Do we have to aim the device or not, i mean is there a led on each side of the dongle or not ?
@François: The IR transmits through the front of the dongle, but normally you do not have to aim it. There are cases where the materials in the room absorb IR, so you would have to aim the L5 Remote at the TV.
ITS FEBRUARY WERE IS THE L5 REMOTE ???
I will 2nd that o/ I’m seriously looking forward to this and as I’m in the U.K. it looks like the wait will be even longer.
( Are we waiting for Itunes to accept the app or maybe last minute improvements/changes to the interface? Either way I’m looking forward to playing with this.
)
Yo will we be able to change how the buttons look. Also what is the release date?????
And is this only available to jailbroken iPhone users
Waiting for this device, I am very impatient. Will be the first to buy it!
Probably manufacturing problems. I don’t think they will keep the february deadline..
@Kasim: You will be able to reconfigure and resize the buttons in the first release of the app. The app will be available through the app store to non-jailbroken iPhones.
We’re waiting on final approvals beyond our control. There are no manufacturing problems, but it is possible we’ll slip a few days into March. Once we have a ship date, we’ll announce via the website, and NOTIFY ME mailer.
Are there any plans of adding UHF to the dongle? My cable has a two tv system so one tv is controlled by IR and the other by UHF. I would delay buying the dongle if it meant I could get UHF…
@Stephen: The L5 Remote will not have UHF. This is an IR-only dongle.
Hi!
Have you got news for release? A date?
Also will it be possible to be shipped
in Europe?
Thanks
@Herve: I wish I could give an exact release date, however, this is the part of the process we don’t control. As I said, we expect a few weeks, and yes, we will ship to Europe from the L5 website.
Will you ship to Australia??
Can I put a vote in here for a WiFi enabled IR repeater type thing for this?
@James. Yes. Gladly.
I presume Apple is holding up the approval of this software. If all 20,000 people who signed up for release notification on this site were to flood Apple with complain letters maybe we’d get some response. Any media folks here that could pressure Apple on a quicker approval process?
A few questions,
Can macro’s have delays?
Can macro’s be edited without having to start from the beginning? eg, i set up a macro to watch tv then realise i need to add a delay in the middle of the macro(as the ps3 slim takes about 15secs to fire up)?
After setting up the iphone/ipod, can the settings/layouts etc be saved to a pc or similar(like the harmony)? If your phone/ipod gets stolen, dropped, breaks it would be a pain to have to go through all the set up again, especially if it was set up by the learning method.
Has autolock been over-rided for iphone/ipod? as this would be become my primary remote and that would be a pain to deal with.
How much to post to Australia?
cheers and good luck
Can’t wait – looks good.
Any updates on availability? There are a number of competing products that are available already, but I don’t like the look of either the apps or the hardware (sometimes both). The L5 looks like the solution I want, but I’m impatient…
Come on Apple, release this app, I can’t beleived they release fart machines and other stupid apps but don’t release this one, and for the L5 people get a letter for us to sign and complain and send to apple
It’s April and the Remote was supposed to come out in February. I am nearly peeing myself in anxiety. How long is Apple going to hold this thing up? Surely it doesn’t take Apple this long to approve an app. What is holding up the release?
Since the app/hardware hasn’t come out yet it’s probably early to ask…. but any plans for an iPad specific version? Imagine all the on-screen buttons possible there…
@Mitch: The macro does have delays, and can be edited without starting from the beginning. There will be in import/export function to share and backup remotes. The autolock can be turned off but not overridden from inside an app. If Apple changes this feature (bug) in the OS, we’ll integrate it. In the mean time, we offer auto screen dimming. I have to check on the shipping cost, but it’s about 15 USD.
@Russ: Stay tuned!
Thanks for the heads up! We’re going to check into that.

Any updates? It’s past mid-April now and the original availability date was February… is the holdup software or hardware related?
hey when will this app be ready im sooo excted to but this i hate having 3 or 4 remotes thanks guys keep up the hard work

Not to be impolite or anything, but can we have some status updates? I’d feel a lot better about waiting for the product if I knew some of the challenges…
+1. I liked the look of this as soon as it was announced. If I could have bought one then and there I would have. I’ve been waiting for several bits of tech lately, a delay is okay, especially if kept informed. I notice that several potential customers have mentioned improvements, are you implementing them before the release, (reason for delay)? Anyhoo, whatever the problems, I hope you get them sorted so I can give you my money.
@Russ and everyone waiting: The hardware has been approved and the app is under review. We have product in inventory, and the minute we get the green light, we’ll notify you. I wish I could tell you exactly when it will be, but it’s not under our control. BTW, the app is amazing!
Great! Thanks for the news update Wade !
Very Impatient…….
Can’t wait! This’ll make everything so much easier around the house!
Hello Wade,
The DAY has come !!
But i saw that monaco isn’t in the list (only france?)
Are you able to ship in monaco?
Thanks for your answer.
@ Hervé: We added Monaco to the list. We’re not able to change the order of the list, so it appears at the bottom. Thanks.
Hi Wade
I cannot checkout – It says >AVS mismatch< I have check my address twice now and that is correct! Help needed
Thanks
We’ll check on this immediately. Sorry for the inconvenience.
@Wade: You really didn’t promise too much. The App is amazing, simple, intuitive an highly customisable. I havent seen a Remote-App like this the last years even on other systems like Windows Mobile or Symbian. Cant wait to get the dongle.
I checked on the AVS errors for international credit cards, and this should now be fixed. I want to thank our early customers for you confidence, patience, and feedback.
AMEX customers: You will be able to use your AMEX within 24 hours. Thank you for your patience.
Once again, looking forward to the delivery to my mailbox. My order i son.
Ordered 30 seconds ago and cant wait…..now the obvious impatient persons question….are you keeping up with orders? How long do you expect a shipment to the U.K. will take?
Hmmm, the app is the right way up, and doesn’t rotate…i guess it goes “upside down” when the accessory is inserted?
Anyone received theirs yet? This has just made my clunky oversized power hungry bag of **** nevo SL redundant…Thankyou L5
Hi …. Can any one let me know how long does it take for the product to be shipped to India…. Just ordered yesterday, and there is no estimate date of shipment or there is no track you order section in the website.
The USPS doesn’t have real-time tracking like FedEx. The tracking number really only tells when USPS receives and delivers the package. We’ve had product reach Spain in 4 days and Taiwan in 3 weeks. It depends on customs and your domestic delivery, so it’s hard to say.
I checked on the AVS errors for international credit cards, and this should now be fixed. I want to thank our early customers for you confidence, patience, and feedback.
I’ve finally received the accessory. Basically 2 weeks after shipping notification. U.K. customs must have been holding it for a while, and for the pleasure I was charged £5.79 and £8.00 Royal Mail charges. So the price basically jumped another £14, ($30 or so?).
Just a warning, its sad that I paid almost as much for the import costs as I did the accessory itself
I assume you will be arranging for worldwide distribution, but it may have been better for U.K. customers if the cost was shared between the app and the accessory. (I believe the limit is £18 without duty charges). Too late now, and its perhaps my own fault for getting so excited and impatient about this product. I should have waited until the U.K. Distribution was organised.
Btw, I have played a little and it all seems to be working how I hoped. Well worth the original charge….haven’t made my mind up yet about the extras.
Hi everyone I received my L5 Remote today that I purchased from ebay This thing is amazing! It took me less then 10 minutes to set up every TV in my home. No complaints here.
Ordered 30 seconds ago and cant wait…..now the obvious impatient persons question….are you keeping up with orders? How long do you expect a shipment to the U.K. will take?
@Emily: 30 seconds… and it’s not there yet?… How about now? You might want to check the post box. lol
Shipping time to the UK is running about 1-2 weeks. Yes, we’re still shipping on the same day if the order is received by 1pm EST.
Thanks for your feature requests.

Nice post and this mail helped me alot in my college assignement. Gratefulness you for your information.
Great to hear that. We will continually work to make the L5 Remote the best remote solution available. If you like the product, please give it 5 stars on iTunes and Amazon.com
